The TigerLight(R) Non-Lethal Defense System Flashlight Saves Officer's Life in New Jersey
Incident Report from Detective Martin Elphick, Detective, Passaic County Sheriff's Dept., NJ:
"My name is Martin Elphick and I am currently employed as a Detective by the Passaic County Sheriff's Department in New Jersey and assigned to the Anti-Crime Unit. This unit was formed to combat the rise in violent crimes in my county. When I started with the unit, another member introduced me to what would later without any exaggeration, save my life.
It was around 10:30p.m. and dark out when we rolled into the local high rise housing projects. I had observed a suspect in a drug transaction. I exited my vehicle and gave chase on foot. He ran into one of the buildings and I was right behind him. As I chased him up the dark, dirty stairwell he began to slow and I was able to apprehend him as he threw down several bags of 'Crack' cocaine. I handcuffed him and recovered the 'Crack'. This was all very routine except for the fact that my back up was not behind me as they normally are. What I didn't know was they were hampered by a Pit Bull in the stair well.
As I was searching the suspect, two of the biggest men I ever had laid eyes on came around the corner and started to yell at me. I later found out that the guy I had just arrested was their nephew. They were not happy! One of the uncles grabbed the nephew and started to try to pull him from my hold, however he was unable to do this. The second began to come toward me and I drew my duty weapon ( a 40. cal. Glock) and drew down........ UN PHASED he began to punch me in the arm in an attempt to disarm me. All I was thinking was I am not dieing at the hands of three no good S.O.B.'s!! However I could see the headlines in the papers. 'Cop shoots two unarmed men.'
Remember when I mentioned that a member of my unit introduced something to me? Well it was the TigerLight. I let the cuffed suspect go, he ran into an open apartment. I back-pedaled, re-holstered and removed the TigerLight. The gun didn't stop these two and when I pulled out this flashlight they did everything but laugh at me. Little did they know they were in for a bit of a surprise. When I sprayed the two I have never seen two grown men (well these guys were over grown) turn into such wimps. While they were holding their hands over their faces, I ran past the two and into the apartment after my arrestee. I took him back into custody and down the stairwell where I was met by my back-up. Needless to say all three got locked up.
I am sure you get the gist of this story, I could have died that night. I live life a little differently now, telling the ones that are close to me just how much they mean. I had to share this letter with the makers of TigerLight and with my Brothers and Sisters in Law Enforcement. If you're looking to buy a flashlight and are not sure what to get, take a LIFE lesson from me get the light that saved my life. It just may save yours.........
